Quranic Guidance on Knowledge

The very first revelation to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) begins with the command, “Read in the name of your Lord who created” (Quran 96:1-5). This passage firmly establishes that the pursuit of knowledge is a sacred duty in Islam, setting the tone for every believer’s approach to life. The Quran repeatedly encourages seeking understanding, saying, “Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’” (Quran 39:9), and, “My Lord, increase me in knowledge” (Quran 20:114). Those endowed with knowledge are described as being raised in rank: “Allah will raise up, to (suitable) ranks (and degrees), those of you who believe and who have been granted knowledge” (Quran 58:11). Knowledge is also linked with true faith, justice, and the ability to discern right from wrong.

Prophetic Teachings on Seeking Knowledge

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) strongly emphasized the importance of acquiring knowledge: “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim” (Sunan Ibn Majah). Another hadith states, “Whoever travels a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise” (Sahih Muslim). The superiority of a learned person over a devout worshipper is likened to the Prophet’s own superiority over the least amongst his companions. When a person dies, their deeds end, except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them (Sahih Muslim)

Rewards and Status of Knowledge Seekers

Seeking knowledge is considered a noble endeavor with immense rewards in Islam. Those who pursue knowledge are honored, regarded as heirs of the prophets, and are promised high ranks in both this world and the Hereafter. Knowledge brings one closer to Allah, enhances worship, and provides guidance on the path of righteousness. Scholars inspire others, become role models, and their wisdom continues to benefit them even after death.
