Islamic Funeral Ceremony

An Islamic funeral (janazah) is a simple, dignified rite that honours the deceased and reminds the living of their return to Allah, based on the Qur’an and authentic hadith.

An Islamic funeral ceremony (Salat al‑Janazah) is performed with humility and remembrance of Allah. The body is washed (ghusl), shrouded in plain white cloth (kafan), and the community gathers to perform the janazah prayer, asking Allah to forgive and have mercy on the deceased.
This entire process reflects the Qur’anic reminder that every soul will return to its Lord, and the prophetic teachings that encourage Muslims to attend funerals, make dua, and support the grieving family with patience and compassion.

Qur’an Verses

  • The phrase كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَائِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ ثُمَّ إِلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُونَ means: “Every soul will taste death, then to Us you will all be returned.”

  • Surah Al‑‘Ankabut (Chapter 29), verse 57, and is often used as a reminder at funerals and in messages about the reality of death and returning to Allah.

  • Qur’an 2:156 is from Surah Al-Baqarah – Arabic: ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَآ أَصَابَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّآ إِلَيْهِ رَٰجِعُونَ
Meaning: “Those who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.’”
Muslims recite this when facing loss, affirming trust in Allah and acceptance of His decree.

    Hadith guidance

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that whoever attends a Muslim’s funeral, prays the janazah prayer and accompanies the burial until it is complete will receive two great rewards. (Meaning from authentic hadith in Bukhari and Muslim.)
He also urged haste in burial: “Hasten with the funeral (process).” (Authentic hadith), to respect the deceased and avoid delays.

    Key steps of the ceremony

    • Ghusl and Kafan: Ritual washing and shrouding in plain white cloth for purity.

    • Salat al-Janazah: Congregational prayer with four takbirs, seeking forgiveness for the deceased.

    • Burial: Body placed facing Qiblah in a simple grave.

Hadith about funeral

  • The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that whoever follows a Muslim’s funeral until the prayer is offered and the burial is completed will receive two great rewards, each like the size of Mount Uhud. (Authentic meaning from Bukhari and Muslim)

  • He also encouraged hastening the burial, advising that the deceased should be taken quickly for prayer and burial without unnecessary delay.

Note: BICS currently does not have facilities to organise funeral services, but we can provide information and guidance in line with local council advice.
